What is the function of the large screws on the back of my old Salomon SX51 ski boots?
Going according to my dusty memory... and a little help from Google Images.
I used to sell ski boots back in the day. If I didn't sell that one I sold many like it. Back when rear entry boots were a great new alternative to the stiff, hard to open wide enough plastic front entry boot shells.
The big screw is connected to a cable hoop that is looped around the boot liner. As you turn the screw, the thingamabobber below the screw moves closer or farther away from the big screw. If you turn the screw to move it closer, you are effectively tightening the cable around your ankle. Hence, you are closing in the space around your ankle and making it not wiggle as much. Spin the big screw the other direction and you allow for easy movement of the ankle in the boot.
The nice thing was when you pulled the big screw out of the secured position, it allowed for very easy entry/exit of the foot.
The problem about the rear entry was that it generally was a sacrifice of some performance on the skis for more comfort in the boot.
Funny thing happened maybe 6 or 8 yrs ago... I was in a ski shop renting boots ('cause I made it all the way to the ski slopes from home sans ski boots) when I heard this kinda loud pop. Looking around I noticed a lady walking around in ski boots. What looked weird was that the front of her right boot was without a toe piece. Her sock covered toes were on the carpet. I did remember overhearing that the rental guy was telling her that her boots may crack due to UV-beaten plastic.
