Browband Bridle
How should an English Bridle (especially the browband) fit a horse?
My friend bought a bridle for her thoroghbred gelding last year and was going to sell it when she realized it was too big for him. Even though he is a thoroughbred, he has a fairly small head, but she bought him a draft/oversized bridle. Recently she bought a saddle, and since the bridle matches it in color, she has decided to use the bridle. We had to punch a few holes in it to make it fit like it should, which worked fine, but the browband is WAY too big. I hae pointed this out many times, but she just tells me, 'If the browband is too tight, it causes head-shaking'. Well, yes, I know. But I can fit my whole arm though the browband while it is on the gelding. And it even flops around when he is ridden sometimes. Can anyone give me some sizing rules for browbands, so I can show my friend that even though the bridle fits him everywhere else fine, the browband is still too big? Yeah that's a little on the large size. You want the Brow Band to be snugger than that- it should not be bouncing up and down and hitting him in the face. Basically it should just be snug enough to prevent it wiggling around a lot but not pinching his forehead or ears. The website below has a brief description and a couple of pictures of correctly fitting bridles. Also, as the website says, brow-bands are not that expensive. If she is neglecting to change it because of cost, you can usually find a cheap one for around $20. Some of the nicer ones with a lot of overlay can be very expensive (closer to $200).
