Collar Saddle
using regular saddle for roping?
I am taking roping lessons, I know I asked a ton of questions already, but here we go:
The only Western Saddle I own is a Trail Saddle- heavy and good leather, but it has a normal sized horn. I think the top may be bigger,but that is it. It was $700 with no silver, so it is not that cheap of a saddle.
My instructor thinks it will be ok for pulling the dummy around (~60lbs) but would probably break for an actual steer.
My question is, anyone rope with a normal western saddle? I do plan on putting rubber around it to protect the leather, which may add some support as well- but do you think it would break if it had to hold a cow? Any way around it? Tips?

ps- we do have a Breast Collar as well, but no flank/Back Cinch if that makes a difference
Absolutely wouldn't rope with a trail saddle. No doubt that Saddle Horn will break if you log onto a 500 calf. You need one that is built specifically for roping. Yes, you need a back cinch. The weight of the calf and the jerk on the rope will lift your saddle off your horse's back and pinch his shoulders if you've stepped down to tie your calf.
