Cyprium Dee-Ring Snaffle with oval peice?
Okay, so i recently went to the local tack store to buy a bit for my horse. I've always just worked her off of a regular dee-ring snaffle, and as far as i know that's what she was broke on. But the store didn't have any in stock so i bought a different bit. It's a Dee Ring snaffle, but it has a oval piece in the middle, a link. When I do my hand-test thing that you always do with bits, it pinches, like, alot. But the person at the tack store and every other place or person i've asked says it's supposed to be really gentle and non-pinchy. Anyone know what's up with this bit? And what's your opinion, do I use it on my horse or not?

Too often people don't understand what makes a bit harsh or not. The 2-piece mouthpiece snaffle actually can be the harshest bit there is. Sounds like you've got the beginnings of understanding when you talk about the 'hand-testing". Holding the bit in your hand in a certain way to understand how it feels in the horses' mouth is the beginning of understanding how bits function.
The bit you are showing in the link is actually a French Link - it imparts less of a pinch than a 2 piece mouthpiece. the 2-pc mouthpiece when pulled enough by the reins can impart a very uncomfortable/painful nutcracker type pinch on the horses' tongue. This french link allows the action on the reins to pinch less quickly and with less force than a standard 2-pc snaffle. Many people use this type of French link on a green horse very successfully. Did you go to buy a bit bacause there was something wrong with the one you're using now? I am curious as to why you went to the store to buy another bit. If what you had worked well, why not stay with it? If the reason is that the bit you were using now is lost due to belonging to someone else or being broken or something, I'd suggest finding one just like what's worked well. If instead you were looking for a bit to get to the next level, we would need a clear idea of what's working now and what your goals are before we can suggest whether this bit would be right or not.
One more thing - Cyprium was created to take the place of a full copper mouthpiece. Copper is a soft metal, so if it's used for the whole mouthpiece of a bit and a horse chomps on it at all, sharp cuts can be made by the horse's teeth that will cause pain when the bit is used. Cyprium allows the sweeter mouthpiece without the soft copper compared to full Stainless Steel.
