Whats up with my horse?

He seems really... like... touchy kinda... i used to have a horse that would let me walk right up to him, even if he was eating, he would even let me run up to him... but my new horse flash is SO different, he is usually hard to catch if i dont have a treat for him, he usually walks away if you try to walk up to him while he is eating, and he just seems kinda touchy... he tottaly freaks out if you get barely mad at him. Today i was picking up his back feet, and he put all his presure on me and yanked his foot down (he does it EVERY time i pick his foot up) and it kinda hurt, so i slapped his butt (no even hard) and he tottaly freaked out. My other horse sandy didnt even care. What should i do?

Definitely sounds like trust issues. I have 6 horses and 5 of them will let me do pretty much anything to them or around them, but I have this one 7 year old QH that freaks out to everything that involves people. When I first got him 3 years ago, it took me 2 days just to catch him and then feeding him, geez, I couldn't be within sight of him or he wouldn't eat. When I would groom him his whole body would tense up and every time I touched him with curry comb he would flinch. It took me about 3 months of working with him for about 2 to 3 hours a day, 7 days a week for him to get to the point where he didn't flinch at everything. Obviously 3 years later, he still has some trust issues, but he is no where near as bad as he was before. Just work with him everyday, and just do the simply stuff, like grooming him or even taking him for walks, just bond.
