What's a good edging for a fleece blanket?

I have some fleece I would like to use for a blanket for my son, but I don't know how to do an edging on it. What would be a good thing to do for the edging? I don't know how to do the tied edging around the blanket, but that is one thing I'm willing to do. I just want to see what other ideas there are. Any ideas and instructions would be useful.

The great thing about fleece is that you don't have to finish the edges to stop it from fraying. That means you can do just about anything you want.

I will attempt to describe a faster, simpler way to make fringe if you have equipment (I'm a sewer so I have everything!):

To cut fringe:

The easiest way to cut fringe on fleece is to use 1 large cutting mat and 1 small cutting mat, a ruler and rotary blade cutters.

Lay fleece on the larger cutting mat. Lay a small cutting mat on top of the fleece, 2 1/2" away from end of fleece. Fold the 2 1/2 inch edge over the small mat so that the mat is sandwiched between the fleece.. Use a rotary cutter to cut 1/2" wide fringe. Cut from edge of the fleece to the folded edge. To crotchet around the edges I used a small eyelet tool (an awl with a small hole--and cut holes every 1/2 inch. If you use a small crotchet hook, you can poke it through but your fingers may get a little tired. I have sewn a zig zag stitch along the edge and used the threads to crotchet the edging but there is a hazard that the threads can break and the crotchet can come off. I do like crotchet edging and have done it successfully with a small crotchet hook for the first round and used a larger crochet hook the second and third time around. It looks nice with colorful yarns.

I have used satin blanket binding as well. You can purchase the satin blanket binding at any fabric store.

If you have a sewing machine that has extra decorative stitches, you can use those to sew along the edges. Use a decorative thread (Rayon, multicolored etc.) and sew along the edges. You may want to use a water soluable stabilizer (available at fabric stores) to keep the fabric from stretching out of shape wile you sew. When you wash the blanket the stabilizer will disappear.

My favorite edging is using a blind hem stitch. (The Blind Hem Stitch is three or more straight stitch then a zig zag then more straight stitches.) Tighten the upper tension and sew close enough to the edge of the fabric so needle sews the straight stitch on the fabric and the needle zigs zags off of the edge. By tightening the upper tension, the thread tightens up and leaves a scalloped edge. (I hope you can understand my explanation without a diagram....)
