different bit, which one?
Okay so, just before some of you keep reading. I am not interested in hearing about how this horse needs more training and what not, i am not interested in hearing about how i should use a snaffle.. So if your going to give me an answer like that, please do not waste your time.
I currently am riding my horse in a mechanical hackamore. He has always done fine in it when i Trail Ride him etc. But lately in the arena he just pretty much ignores it. So i've decided to put him back into a bit, just so i can get his attention.
I have the few possibly bits.
- Twisted gag draw bit
- Jr Cowhorse Bit
- Argentine Snaffle
- Tom Thumb.
I do not want to hear your logic on snaffles, and that i shouldnt be using these bits etc. But what bit do you think i should try out? He runs through a snaffle! So no.
I was thinking of buying a Wonder Bit. (Gag Bit). Or maybe a curb or something.
Find a friend who has lots of bits, or a local tack shop with a bit loaner program! I'm a firm believer in letting the horse pick the bit! And on equal occasions I've had horses respond better to stronger or lighter bits!
For example. I had a dressage horse once who had horrible breaks. I started Trail Riding him in a Curb Bit, and he had great breaks. I thought I was screwed because we couldn't use a curb in lower level dressage. But then I tried him one day in a very large Mouth Loose Ring Snaffle... he was a dream! I never would have thought going to a very mild snaffle would have worked.
Now on the other hand, I had a Barrel Racer last year. When we got him his previous owner sent his bit. It was a horrible looking contraption with a dog chain and like 8 inch shanks. I thought, forget this, I'm not putting this in his mouth. So I started him in a snaffle... no turn what so ever. Ok.. on to a wonder bit... little better, but not great. So I gave in and put his previous bit in... he instantly transformed into the push button Barrel Horse I knew he was! That awful looking bit was what he liked, and what he responded best to!
I tell you both of these stories to say... let the horse chose the bit he wants! Borrow a few different types and see what your horse likes.
If the horse does well with the Rope Nose of the hack, think about a sidepull with a snaffle attached. Or a wonder bit with a rope nose attachment. Look into maybe a sweet six. Also experiement with single and Double Jointed mouth pieces. Just start trying a few and you'll start to pick up on what your horse likes!
