Mullen Mouth versus regular snaffle?
I'm still on a hunt to find the mildest bit possible for my mare, I've been thinking about a mullen mouth and I wanted to see what people who've used one think of it.
I'm planning on buying a happy mouth mullen Mouth Bit. Are there any downsides to using these bits as opposed to using a snaffle?
There are no shanks on a mullen mouth bit. And I've always been taught that the more joints there are the harsher the bit is.
When looking at bits, remember, the shorter the shanks, thicker the mouthpiece, and the more "joints" in the mouthpiece, the milder it is.
A mullen mouth has a solid mouthpiece (but no port, so its milder than a curb but harsher than a snaffle), it has shanks (so harsher than a Ring Snaffle).
If your mare neck reins really well, and you want to get something with shanks, you might want to look into a little low port Correction Bit. It sounds harsh, but in reality, you can get short shanks, and the mouthpieces are broken, so its still flexible and allows you to "two-hand" ride when necessary. The port is low enough that the horse won't be bothered by it much more than a mullen.
If you mare doesn't neck rein well, then I recommend something like a D-ring snaffle that allows you to direct rein and is super light on her face. The snaffle will give you less "stop" and less flexion at the poll, but be lighter on the mouth.
Its always smart to try something light, and upgrade to a more severe bit if the horse shows they need it.
