Can someone help me out? Its about how to own a horse and such..?

1. Is it cheaper to have the vet come out to see my horse? Or for me to go the vet?

2. How much is it to have a horse shoed?

3. How many times a year is my horse suppose to, get a dentist check up, vet check up, farrier check up and more?

4. Can a Western Saddle be used for just plain trail rides down the road and such?

Thank you very much!!

Sound's exciting, don't get intimidated, you will learn as you go along...you get "overs" on most instances when you have a horse. Now for your questions. #1 I have to disagree with the first answer, of course it is more expensive for a house call for a vet, it takes more time out of his day plus gas, etc...and it isn't as convenient to work on a horse on a house call..so, there is no debate on that question...it is CHEAPER to make an appointment, let them know what you are wanting to do and haul your horse to the vet and be prompt... #2 I would get his teeth floated at least once every 2 yrs, but a dental check annually, and if the vet suggests, then go ahead and get the teeth floated. Having teeth floated and worming is the best thing that you can do to help your feed conversion to nutrition for your horse. #3 Unless you have a real foot problem that you are dealing with, 6 to 8 weeks intrevals is a good schedule for your farrier...just have the farrier put you on his schedule, because if you call him at 7 1/2 wks and try to get him, you may not get him until you have lost a shoe and caused some damage. Remember, even though a farrier isn't a vet, they know feet, and you are also getting the benefit of his experience and exams when he comes to reset your horse. You can get a reset and/or new shoes from $75 to $350 or even more, depending on the farrier and the problems that your horse may be having with his feet. If a farrier has to spend half a day, making special shoes, pads, etc for your horse, then expect to pay for it...your farrier, once you find one that keeps his word about his appointments, is patient with your horse and is helping your horse stay sound, is one that you need to keep and placate...yes, kiss his behind if you have to, they are NOT all that way and if you are lucky and get one, do what it takes to keep him. #4 Yes, a western or English Saddle can be used, I prefer a western saddle for trailrides, but it's just a personal preference. If this is your first horse (and your question sorta gives us a clue) then it would be wise to get a trusted expert to help you choose a safe and trustworthy horse that you can enjoy. It is best to pay the expert yourself, that way he/she will be more objective is his/her compensation is coming from you and not from commission from helping to sell a horse. Good luck, don't get in a hurry, you will know when you find the right one, get a trainer/instructor to help you for a short while in the beginning and have fun!
