What English Bit should i use on my Western Horse?
My Barrel Racer is being trained to do english, but the english bit i have (o Ring Snaffle) is too weak for her, such as she won't stop or turn. So i've been searching this a lot and talking to some experienced english people, and they've all said a Full Cheek corkscrew snaffle. do you agree? the Western Bit she is in, is a Wonder Bit.
i would be doing jumping, and i have tried this bit for a few months and it's still not working.
The wonder bit is quite severe. The horse's is probably wondering what's going on now that she's doing English in a milder bit. It will take her a little while to get used to it so give her a sporting chance. She may need time and sympathetic riding to soften up her mouth. "English" riding is about skill not brute force, Turning and stopping use the rider's seat and legs as well as the hands and are not just about hauling the horse around by the mouth.
Corkscrews are horrible severe bits and have no place in sympathetic riding. Full-cheek snaffles act on the poll as well as on the mouth and with a simple Snaffle Mouth-piece are effective without being very severe. If you go for a full Cheek Snaffle remember that you will need Fulmer loops to attach the upper end of the bit cheeks to the bridle cheek pieces or you will lose the poll effect.
