Horse takes off on me- how do I break him of this?
Just purchased a 14 yr arab gelding who hasn't been ridden in 3-4 yrs. Does fine on the ground and at a walk in the saddle. But today I took him out on the trail and he started wanting to trot, but when I asked him to slow, he took the bit, raised his head and tried to speed up. I turned him into a circle and rode him in circles until willing to walk. About 5 mins later he took off into a gallop and there was no stopping him. Finally, the road came to a dead end and he stopped, I rode him back, worked him on the lunge, and tried riding again. When I asked for the trot, he took off and almost ran into the barn. Teeth are fine, vet check was clear. I'm using a snaffle. What kind of ground work can I do to work on this? He stops fine when leading, and walking, but when he wants to speed up, he just takes off. So I'd like to start on the ground and then I need ideas of how to work on this on his back. I don't want to use a tie-down because that solves nothing. Help!
You could teach him to bend to a stop. Use one rein and bend his head to your knee until he stops. Work on it at a stop, walk, and trot, and then you can use it to stop him if he tries to take off. It'll get him thinking and keep him from flying off the handle. A harsher bit will just make him grumpy. You need to actually calm his brain down, not just force him.
