Pony spooked at hikers?
My friend and I were hacking the other day and planning to ride up to another yard, but we came across about 10 teenage boy hikers blocking the road so we stood to the side of the road to let them pass. Suddenly my friends pony spooked and started cantering down the road and my pony followed and then we had to turn around. We managed to stop them but I just wanted to know why they got spooked? (We weren't letting the reins flop)
Horses, as I'm sure you know, have blind spots directly behind them and directly in front of them. Their eyes can also see things independently of one another, meaning they can see one thing with the left eye and another with the right, to an extent. When the boys passed, they might have gone into one of the pony's blind spots and when they suddenly reappeared on the other side, the pony spooked. Sometimes horses panic when things move from one line of vision to the other. Also, one of the boys could have thrown something or said something, but you probably would have noticed that. Nice job slowing them down, I know how hard that can be!
