Riders Choice
I am a Beginner/ Intermidate rider and i am looking to buy a Mustang... Is that a good choice?
If you are up for a great challenge, then this is a perfect opportunity!!!
I highly suggest one thing...take stock of yourself first...do you possess a strong authoritative personality??? Have you honed your focus skills??? Are you very aware of all the nature of your realm & that which you will share with this creature??? Are you willing to spend many hours every single day (no exceptions) with this animal for at least your first 2 years together??? Do you possess the patience of a true saint???
The reason for this personal check is for your well-being, as well as that of a wild animal (they have not been domesticated long enough, or well enough, to be considered otherwise). You will have to earn this being's trust in you with it's life--literally--before you will even see an ounce of caring that you even exist to him/her. This wild horse has been plucked from it's family herd, which you have no idea what place it served in that group (hopefully you don't unwittingly get a lead mare or alpha male), gone through the "man-processes" of vets, traveling, re-herding with other horses of many places, been poked, prodded, and probably yelled & swung at in the mean time...taken from a wide open space into many small, box-type places, roped, pulled on, tied up, fed everything but what it has grown up on...a very displaced, frustrated, scared to near death, animal. Even if you buy from a reputable farm, instincts are still at the fore-front of this breed, and understanding that they are prey animals, you can hardly imagine how they feel about us predators. And through all of this, your patience, authority in the "herd", your wariness of your surrounds--all will be tested past your current limits...on a daily & continual basis.
Once you have succeeded in gaining the trust of this animal, your guard of this trust can never...and I mean never!...fail or falter...else you will be back farther past square one than you first started out with...it only takes one show of fear or unsureness to put you on the total outs. However, if that bond is strong & kept as such, you have a partner for life...a horse that will do just about anything you ask of it.
Sooo, still up for the challenge??? Then go for it!!! Do the research, visit & communicate with others who have been working with 'stangs for many years. Invest in training, esp. if you have access to Native American teachers...there are few people who can commune with animals, esp. horses, as they are...Gawani Pony Boy is an excellent start. Pat Parelli has two schools open now, and his techniques are quite successful with horses of every kind. You've got your work cut out for you, Sweety, but if this is your dream, put it together & make it happen...
