why are saddle fittings prohibited?
If you are talking about a saddle valve for a humidifier or such that attaches to the copper water lines in your house, they can and will eventually start to leak as the rubber gasket dries out. It puts a hole into your pipe that will have to be cut out and replaced if you want to disconnect the device using the water because those things never actually shut off completely, and most times the hole that it punches into the water line will get bigger over time. The real kicker here is that most people attach the saddle valve to the line going to the hot water tank (as they should), but they put it ABOVE the water shut off for the tank, meaning that when that thing fails, you can't just turn the knob right there to stop it to fix it, you have to shut the water off for the entire house and open the faucets and what not to get the water out of the lines.
Here were I live they are not prohibited, but only hacks and idiots use them because they are nothing but problems down the road. Definitely want to get a separate stem and shut off valve for anything that needs water.
