riding stirrups!?
i have my own horse and i use stirrups that are just a plain straight metal however i have group lessons every week and i have seen that there is many diffferent shapes of stirups. why is this? do some stirups help with different problems or are there different ones depending on wheter your Show Jumping or doing dressage? id just like to know because my leg postition can sometimes go wrong and i move my legs forward to much is there a type of stirup i could use to help me or any advice on how to help solve that problem would be good aswel!! thanks alot x
Well there are breakaway stirrups in case you fall so you don't get dragged, there are stirrups that encourage you to keep your heels down by having an inverted base, there are stirrups that you can adjust by pivoting the base to be more comfortable for your leg or to encourage leg position. No stirrup "fixes" improper leg position but I have found different stirrups to be advantagous to encouraging proper position. For example the type of stirrups that have the angled foot rests helps many develop the proper feel for keeping their heels down. This however does not necessarily coorelate to the proper alignment of the ankle knee and hip, it justs helps to keep your heels down. The stirrup type where the base swivels and locks is to encourage proper contact with the saddle, again won't lock your leg into position and more like a suggestion. With that said riding with NO stirrups is probably the single best thing you can do for lower leg position, development of seat and hands, and balance :~) Find a competent helper to control your horse while you ride with no stirrups and really focus on your position. The person on the ground can help watch your position and let you know when it is off so you can develop the "feel" for the proper position. Do this several times a week for a couple of months and you will have retrained yourself into riding correctly. You will have forgotten what it was like to ride incorrectly! Also has someone competent fit you and your saddle to your horse. Sometimes illfitting saddles can ruin proper saddle posture. Make sure all that is straight first ;~) Good luck!
