how can you tell the differance between silver and Stainless Steel.?
A magnet will not stick to a high grade stainless.
Regular silver will tarnish, with a black oxide layer (Actually, it forms silver-oxide which is light sensitive and turns black as metallic silver is formed when exposed to light over time, just like black and white photographic film) on the surface. Stirling silver and stainless steel do not tarnish in the traditional sense as each builds up a clear oxide layer which is quite passive. In the case of Stirling silver, the silver is actually coated with a clear coating which acts exactly like the oxide on stainless steel in that it separates the base metal from the environment which leaves the base metal shiny. One way to tell is to use a non-abrasive mild metal polish. An abrasive polish will remove the coating on the Stirling silver, which you do NOT want to do. Stirling silver will have NO residue while stainless steel will have residue with a white or gray color. Stainless steel is also a bit dull looking, not exactly as shiny as Stirling silver is when compared side by side. You are wrong in that some stainless steels ARE magnetic to some extent. What makes stainless steels stainless is the addition of chromium which forms a layer of chromium-dioxide on the surface, which is very tightly cohesive and passive, so that even a layer a few molecules thick separates the base metal from the environment and by being only a few molecules thick is mostly clear.in appearance, but does dull the appearance somewhat compared to Stirling silver.
